How to Measure Your Floors from MyFlooring.com on Vimeo. Let's talk about how to measure your room for your MyFlooring installation. We're going to be using a measuring tape, and while that may seem intimidating, I want to assure you that it's not. Whenever you pull out the measuring tape, you're going to be able to see in inches, and if you pull it all the way out to 12, you're going to be able to see the one foot marker. So with the measuring tape you'regoing to be able to measure both in inches and in feet. Now, if you let go of the measuring tape, it's going to slide back in. However, most measuring tapes have this great lock tool to where you can pull this out, hit the lock switch, and it stays in place. This is going to help us later. Pull out your measuring tape and place it against your baseboard. Next, you'll place the measuring tape across the floor while the rest of the tape is upright at a 90 degree angle. Pull and drop, pull and drop. You can use this pull and drop motion to continue measuring the length of your floors while completely standing straight. You don't need to bend over at all to do this. Once your measuring tape hits the other wall, you can hold the tape upright. As you can see, the length of my floor is 16 feet and 9 inches. Simple, right? You'll need a piece of paper for this next part, but it's going to be really simple. What you need to do is draw the structure of your room, and do it in shapes. Now, the shapes that you want to think in terms of are squares and rectangles. My room is one big square and I have a bay window that is not in a shape of a square or a rectangle. So what I do with this abnormal shape is I still consider it a rectangle, and I choose to measure the longest distance from wall to wall, just like I'd do if it were a rectangle. Now I'm going to show you how to measure hallways. Draw squares to represent your various rooms that are connected by the hallway. Then draw the shape of the hallways that will be getting new flooring. Once the shape is drawn, simply block out sections that are represented as rectangles. Then measure those rectangles just as you would in a room. Keep these measurements to put in our system as you're purchasing your floors. Now, you may be wondering, "What if I get the measurements wrong?" Don't worry. With our worry-free measurement guarantee, we have you covered.
